Hello 2021!

1/7/2021

Wherever we are right now is based on our choices. Want something different? Make another choice. Try a new approach. Find another solution. Nothing changes until we do, and a new year is a great time to change.
A few people have asked me about my 2021 goals and resolutions. I stopped making resolutions years ago because they have a lot to do with changing habits and developing new ones. I needed to change the stories driving my behavior to create new habits, and I wasn’t always doing that, so no resolutions.

In terms of goals, I don’t have a lot of new ones. Most of my goals are a continuation from last year, so I focused more on updating my projections instead. So, if I didn’t set new goals or make resolutions, what did I do? I decided to focus on things that I want to attract and repel.

When I think about attracting and repelling things, I immediately revert to my pest control background. Insect attractants are treatment products designed to lure pests using synthetic pheromones or odors that pests like along with other ingredients such as sugars and proteins. Insect repellants do the exact opposite. They drive the insects away.

So, when I think about where I am in my life today, I think more about things that I look forward to, and that’s how I structured my 2021 intentions.

Energy Management

Picture
"...It's time to confront reality. Productivity isn't about clockwork. It's about energy management."
This statement by Michael Hyatt reinforces what I learned in coach school about Energy Leadership. Energy Leadership is both a form of leadership and the actual process of leading energy in a way that works for us rather than against us. It explores the "why" behind our behavior. Because once we know the "why," we can then choose "how" we want to behave going forward. But, back to Michael.

Michael offers three secrets to help us manage our energy.
  1. Don't sacrifice sleep for work. Although it's tempting to skip sleep when we're busy, it can negatively impact our work's quality and speed, making us less productive. When we work more than 10-hours, my dad always said we're just making mistakes anyway.
  2. Fuel your body with whole foods. We must eat healthy meals and snacks to fuel our bodies strategically. Also, don't skip meals.
  3. Conserve mental energy by making fewer decisions. We must trust our team to do the work and save our brainpower for critical issues and complex decisions. Delegate and automate.

3 Tips to Advance Your Career in the New Year

Picture
Here are "3 Tips To Advance Your Career In The New Year" from Ashira Prossack, a ForbesWomen Contributor, and a bit of Coach Tarsh commentary along the way.

#1. Get clear on your goals. Prossack says, "If you aren't clear on what you want, you won't be clear on how to get it. This can derail even your best efforts for advancement. Take some time to think about where you'd like to be in six months or a year. Think about what you're happy with now and what you wish you could change."
My thoughts: Get clear. Get focused. Get results. Enough said.

#2. Invest in your professional development.
Prossack says, "Learning new skills not only helps you succeed at work, but also helps prevent boredom and stagnation. Choose from options such as online courses, live virtual training, business coaching, or simply reading a book. There’s no wrong way to learn."
My thoughts: This tip is near and dear to my heart. There are so many ways that we can learn, from FREE courses to paid courses to watching videos on YouTube. We are in the information age, and we can find information almost anywhere. If we want to learn, we can.
#3. Make networking a priority. Prossack says, "Think of your professional network as a support system that's there to help you grow and advance your career."
My thoughts: Shifting my mindset and looking at networking as a way to help others, and for others to help me, changed everything—mindset matters.
